Over the last few years I have been exploring sculptural concepts with my work. This has allowed me to develop my preference for surface texture and carving. Domestic ware lets people handle and use the pots a potter makes, and I want people to still be able to, and in fact want to, handle the pieces I make. I like this connection between potter and the public. I like the thought of people interacting with my work.
The pieces I have been making lately are seeds and seedpods, as well as platforms and platters to support them. They are all small in scale, which invite people to pick them up. They are polished, which has a warmer feel than most glazes. Most of them are carved, which gives the fingers something to explore. And often there are seeds inside seedpods, a suggestion of life within just waiting for someone to discover, while the seedpods are there protecting that life.
