I have a background in teaching and textiles. I work with 20 micron Australian merino wool. Childhood memories of growing up on a sheep grazing property stay with you as you remember the happy times: of sweeping up belly wool, throwing fleeces ready for classing at shearing time and discovering ‘original’ art works in secret caves.
My artworks are entirely hand felted. I begin with the raw fleece (washing and combing), laying out the white background fibres before ‘painting’ the picture (dying separate fibres and building up the picture piece by piece). Lastly the work is set in place by felting. The result is not entirely predictable.
My inspiration for this collection comes from travels within Australia and beyond. I am inexplicably and repeatedly drawn to and touched by the Original people of the land and their relationship with their environments. I present the ‘Wiradjuri Collection’.
