My personal philosophy is centred around the manipulation of glazes, contrast in colour and form to create visually exciting and emotionally rewarding works of Art using the medium of reduction fired stoneware. By exploring the nature and limitations of the materials at my disposal, and by gathering this knowledge into a vocabulary of expression, I hope to break new ground and develop techniques. This work sees the incorporation of classic celadon within developing stoneware glazes in surface decoration as well as a more sculptural vessel forms.
I want to escape from the familiar and the comfortable and will seek to push into unknown territory and take chances, that by doing so, I will continue to enjoy exploring glazes and shapes towards an overall feeling of asymmetry and spontaneity which has always been my journey and to show the limitless creative possibilities of this very old traditional medium: ceramic.
As an artist, I must explore the never-ending design potentials of glazes, the flow of colours and through them to the expression of this world, which lives in us. This body of work is in white stoneware, fired 1300 reduction in a gas kiln, using wood ash and a large range of stoneware glazes.
