An interest in the raw materials of the pottery tradition and the environment that forms them provide continual impetus and motivation for my work.
As luck would have it we were drawn to live on land of ancient story, recent history and weathered clays, all visible on the surface.
These are the iron-rich clays I use for my stoneware bodies: for their fine-grained plastic nature and also in the hope that they might convey some sense of their own story, rather like the wind whispering through the old angophoras surrounding the abandoned Periwinkle gold diggings where the clays were lifted to the surface over a century ago.
Rich deposits of minerals and clays suitable for use by the potter abound in the Cudgegong region, many available commercially and I enjoy utilizing them in body and glaze for the ways in which they bring their particular character to the work.
Porcelain stone from nearby Ulan is ground for translucent, melodious body and a palette of pale glazes, providing the means for exploring a growing fascination with the ways in which tonal white enters our lives.
