Jane Barrow’s ceramic works have an enduring classic integrity drawing from her background in textile design and her extensive study of traditional firing and decorating techniques in Japan.
Recent work ranges from streamlined thrown forms that are loosely slip and glaze decorated with simple systems of patterning. Strong elements of repetition of line and contrasting with refinement of surface create rhythm and movement.
Others are finished with fine coating of crushed local igneous rock and fired in saggers with charcoal to create a subtle lustrous quality. These are fine finishes – rather than heavy glazes – and retain the refined and detailed surface qualities of their original forms.
