IN PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Some critics believe the works of Tasmanian based ceramicist, Hermie Cornelisse are created to tease. Her ceramic half finished boxes are a good example of this. Appearing as an unfinished origami creation; taunting the viewer who is powerless to make the final fold with the rigid edge.
Others say her work harks back to her childhood.
They say to view her work is to take a journey into her “childhood kitchen”. Familiar kitchen objects have been an interest of hers. Skillfully covered forms in repetitive but by no means perfectly symmetrical patterns.
Cornelisse is not so comfortable articulating the meaning or motivation behind her creations. Her certainty lies in her ability to find a happy balance between her head for business and her head for creativity.
In the pursuit of balance, Cornelisse has made a deal with herself. The more success she has with selling her work, the more liberty she gets to create adventurously.
She says business does not determine what she makes but merely acts to sharpen her priorities. What and when she’ll develop a particular idea and when and where it will be sold, for example.
“Risks to me mean ongoing experimentation, always going one step further into unknown creative territory,” she says.
“…attempting to break new aesthetic ground with every decision made – even if it only amounts to a very small change.”
Books are one of her preferred tools for finding inspiration.
Cornelisse enjoys the unexpected influence on her thought processes from novels, biographies and technical books. Her artistic expression covers a range of mediums including textiles and acrylic paint and of course, ceramics.
“Basically I love all materials and the traditionally associated processes,” she says.
“Every medium used gets complicated and re-configured using a cross-fertilisation process, jumbling up the methods and aesthetic values; always in the hope of creating something I haven’t seen before.”
Delegates can look forward to sharpening their own business skills under the focused eye of this versatile artist and business woman who has succeeded in her pursuit of happiness.
