In response to an ongoing exploration of identity I have revisited my emotional and physical memories of my childhood growing up in Alice Springs, Central Australia. The environment nurtures in its makeup many metaphoric descriptions that connect with my personal memories of growth and the journey I had.

The ceramic bottle or vessel forms I use reflect physical and emotional human characteristics. Abstract line markings or carvings on the vessels are developed from familiar imagery such as spinifex, ranges, rusting wire fences, gaps, white gum trees, water holes and lizards.

The palette I use symbolises the subtle tonal and changing gradations of this landscape when observed from a distance, like a mist of colours lining the horizon, with the ever-changing play of light, but on closer observation the detail, textures and complexities are revealed. Multiple satin and gloss glazes layer like clothing the land or ‘Bodyscape’ of the forms. All works are thrown on the wheel, some with the inclusion of hand built sections and mixture of clay bodies. The forms are then fired in an oxidation kiln to Stoneware.

The bowl is used as a symbolic and practical form that informed the development of my work. Its familiarity and domestic connections to the function of containment evoke associations that embody concepts of growth and nurturing.

Some forms are arranged in small groupings creating a narrative that speaks of family gatherings or emotional moments of socialization or interaction. Like a documented photo or a familiar moment or memory of time passed.

I explore the idea that environment, spirit and memory are strongly connected and have influence over the other in understanding self through experience and contemplation. Childhood memories are precious making us who we are today and linking us to tomorrow.
