All of my art is in response to the delights of nature, the elements in all of their beauty and so many guises. I have always been passionate about drawing and painting, ever since I was a young child and my grandfather taught me to paint and draw. It is in my blood. I am happiest when I am out ‘en plein air’ with my pastels or water colours and I am battling the hot sun, the changng light, the wind and the flies.

I choose whichever medium is most portable; soft pastels do not require water. They are easy to carry and are a simple direct way of rendering a landscape with vigour and vitality. I work fast, I finish off in the studio but essentially I try to capture the moment when I am outside with nature.

My work is evolving and developing. Since I have become an artist full time I can explore all sorts of ideas. You can see some of those in my ‘rubbings’ work in this exhibition. I took my inspiration from nature directly, but then responded to it in my own meditative way. Bark, rocks, leaves and leaf litter are the starting points of these pieces. The results surprised me, I did not know where they would lead but it was enormous fun getting to an end point.

I hope you enjoy the feeling of the windswept dunes, the salt marsh, the long shadows of the evening, and the hot sandy beaches populated with birds in my pictures. This is our planet, our future.
